t Christmas time, the doctors and nurses do everything they can to get as many children as possible home so families can open their presents under the tree together. However, some sick children need to stay in hospital over the Christmas period. So, to brighten up the lives of the many children who find themselves in our care, we hope to light up their Christmas with over 1,500 sustainable light-bulbs. We are asking for your generous support to help us Light Up a Child’s Life this Christmas and provide state of the art care to our wonderful patients and their families at a time when they need it most.

Please support Temple Street Children’s Hospital by making a donation today or purchasing our specially designed Christmas cards.  This will help our hospital to continue to be as extraordinary as the children that come here. Each year we strive to raise €5million in order to maintain our high standards of care in Temple Street.  With the new hospital six years away, we need your help now.

A Christmas Story

Michaela is a very special patient with a very special story to tell. Last Christmas Michaela received the gift of a kidney - possibly the best Christmas present ever.

Michaela was diagnosed with kidney problems when mum Bridie was 18 weeks pregnant. Bridie was told Michaela would have to go on Dialysis as soon as she was born. Michaela and her family travelled to Dublin 3 times a week so that she could receive the treatment she needed, until she got her transplant.

"When I lifted the phone last Christmas and I was told Michaela had been called up for a transplant, I just stood there unable to move, I don’t think I could even answer them. Michaela was asleep in bed, when we woke her up and told her that she was going to get a kidney, she couldn’t believe it either".

Bridie Morly, Mum

Michaela’s new kidney has changed her life completely and she has a bright future ahead of her. Her new kidney has changed not only her life, but the entire family’s lives. Michaela is so much more free now, she doesn’t have to be as careful. She can go on slides and play care free, the small things we take for granted.

Santa's Toy Fund

Christmas is often a difficult time for the children and their families to be in Hospital. So, we strive to make Christmas at Temple Street a very special time for all those in our care and have a close relationship with the big man in red to make sure he doesn't forget Temple Street kids on Christmas Eve.

It is difficult to know exactly what children will be spending Christmas at Temple Street, therefore, this year we are creating a special toy fund, whereby instead of donating a present, you can contribute the cost of a present to the fund. This will help us to provide each and every child a suitable gift at Christmas and make sure each and every letter is answered.

However if you would really like to purchase a toy for one of our special children please read Jill, our play therapist’s letter for some inspiration.

Hello My Name is Jill

I am a Play Specialist in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital and my main focus is to promote positive experiences for the sick children in our care.
I focus on what patients can do and can enjoy.
I advocate to put play on the agenda in the Hospital environment for each and every child, whether it is in the magical environment of the Multi Sensory Room or by the bedside on the ward.

At present I am working with a number of patients who will be with us over the Christmas period. It would be fantastic if Santa could deliver a special present specific to their needs. Specific toys and equipment can make a big difference in their hospital stay and in their everyday lives. For example some of the children that could benefit from Multi Sensory Toys and equipment are our long term children who have been with us since they where born (18 months, 6months, 8 months old), Children who have suffered from stroke, Children who have undergone brain surgery and children who have caught a virus that has affected their the neurological processing abilities.

Take a look at Jill's wish list, to give you some inspiration.

Appeal

We urgently need to raise €2 million for our ambitious redevelopment programme.

Although the care in Temple Street Children’s Hospital is second to none, our busiest ward, known to many as Top Flat, is in urgent need of extensive refurbishment and redevelopment in order to keep up with medical standards and requirements. The ward was last refurbished over 60 years ago when concepts of patient care were vastly different from what they are today. A high percentage of patients, such as Cystic Fibrosis sufferers and Post Neurology surgeries would be regular long term visitors to the ward.

Modern facilities and the equipping of high tech services is an investment in the health of future generations in Ireland.  All of our equipment will be gifted to the new Children’s Hospital when it is built.

Temple Street is a home away from home for many children and we believe creating a comfortable environment for parents of patients should be a basic requirement, not a luxury.

Our Supporters

With your help this Christmas, we will be able to make sure that our vital work continues. Thank you to all of our Corporate Supporters who have sponsored a Light Bulb at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital and donated €1000 to our Light Up A Child’s Life Fund.

We wish you a Happy and Healthy Christmas from everyone here at the hospital.
